May’s moron of the month is, by far and away, Rep. Jamie Raskin.
In a YouTube video titled “Rep. Jamie Raskin schools Christian Nationalist on the Constitution,” Raskin claims that because the Declaration of Independence is not integrated into legal oaths, it is therefore irrelevant to interpreting the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause (timestamp 0:40).
The fact that the Declaration has served as guidance throughout our nation’s history—acting as the philosophical impetus for our laws—was completely lost on the narcissistic congressman. Most notably, Abraham Lincoln invoked the phrase “all men are created equal” to ground the moral nature of the United States and challenge the institution of slavery. The Declaration has widely been accredited as the philosophical guide that informs how the Constitution, and the oaths taken to uphold it, should be interpreted. In fact, Raskin’s argument that we owe no fealty or commitment to the Declaration mirrors the exact reasoning 19th-century Democrats used to refute Lincoln and justify slavery.
But that’s not even the best part. Approximately 1:40 into the video, Raskin argues that the Establishment Clause should be interpreted as a strict “Separation of Church and State.” As his philosophical authority for this view, he cites a letter written by Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptists.
So, let’s summarize. According to this colossal moron, the Declaration of Independence—the nation’s founding document authored by Thomas Jefferson that invokes the Creator multiple times—carries no weight in guiding constitutional interpretation or legal oaths. Yet, the phrase “building a wall of separation between Church & State,” taken from a private letter written by Jefferson years later, is treated as the supreme guiding principle. Did Jamie Raskin swear an oath to the Letter to the Danbury Baptists?
Let’s be honest: this moron’s only true oath is to his political party and its power.
